Cupertino Language Immersion Mandarin/EnglishChinese Immersion Classes, Cupertino Elementary SchoolsAbout Cupertino Language Immersion Program The mission of the Cupertino Union School District is to provide a child-centered environment that cultivates character, fosters academic excellence and embraces diversity. District families, community, and staff join as partner to develop creative exemplary learners with the skills and enthusiasm to contribute to a constantly changing global society. Our program’s goal is to give students of the Cupertino Union School District the opportunity to develop high levels of proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in English and Mandarin. These students will be able to communicate effectively in both languages and achieve proficiency in all academic subjects that will meet or exceed district guidelines. This program is based on a model where the target language, Mandarin, is a vehicle of instruction, not the focus. Additionally, this program will develop in our children an international perspective and appreciation for cultural diversity. What is Two-Way Immersion Education? One of the most interesting innovations to emerge in second language education in the last 30 years is immersion education. During the last decade there has been a shift away from teaching language in isolation from academic content; that is, teaching a “foreign language” as a separate class unto itself. Instead, research shows the most effective way for children to acquire a second language is to integrate instruction into the standard curriculum children are already learning. Language is used as the medium to learn the curriculum that children are required to know. What this means to us is that depending on the grade level your child is in, parts of the Cupertino Union School District’s and the California State Educational curriculum will be delivered in Mandarin (e.g., social studies, science, music, and language arts; subjects that are language “rich”). At different times social studies, science, mathematics, music, and language arts curriculum are delivered in English. Information organized and provided by local Real Estate Agent, Malka Nagel |
